How Five Nights at Freddy's 1 is Tense
Five Nights at Freddy's is a horror game made by Scott Cawthon, and the rules are simple. The setting is in a restaurant called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, which is a place very similar to Chuck E. Cheese. There are animatronics in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, and you must defend yourself against them, as they do attempt to get to you.
You start off in your office, which is basically the main room of the entire game. The goal is to survive until 6AM, and you start at 12AM. Of course, you don't actually have to play for six real hours; it's just minutes, meaning after 7 minutes, you win. The Phone Guy is your guide who teaches you how to basically do your job. He calls you and talks to you nightly, and he also just keeps you company. Now, with the animatronics, they will attempt to get to your office, as their AI says that they need to find a human being to entertain. However, during the nighttime, when they come, they will see you as an endoskeleton. An endoskeleton is the under layer of an animatronic. It is made of metal and holds all the wires and basically keeps the actual appearance of the animatronic stable and structured. Now, the rule is is that there is not supposed to be an endoskeleton without its costume, as it is against the rules and might scare the children. The animatronics will scan you and mistake you for one. As a result, they will stuff you into a suit, which wouldn't be bad if the costume didn't have sharp and painful metal things in it.
To stop an animatronic from getting in, you have to shut the doors if one is there. The only way to see it is to turn on the light with a button. The button is located directly under the door button. If an animatronic is there, the game will emit THIS sound.
When you see an animatronic AND you hear this sound, close the door immediately! You don't want it sneaking in.
You also have a camera to monitor the animatronics to make it easier to see one. The doors, lights, camera and even the light in the office (which you can't manually control) all use up power.
Power is a VERY important part of Five Nights at Freddy's. It is the only thing that helps you survive (minus the doors.) The reason why there is power is that you can't just win the game by keeping both doors closed and that's it, you have to actually CONSERVE it! You don't want to run out of power...
If you DO, this is what happens:
So first, everything stops. You can no longer use the camera, you can't use the lights or close the doors, and you can't even see the time, making you more anxious. Then, Freddy himself goes over to your left door, and his face will begin to flash and he will emit music. You might be confused, and find that bizzare, but supposedly, this is part of Freddy's code. When he detects that the room he is in is dark, he will begin to flash his face and play calming music. This is so that when there is a power outage, so that kids don't freak out, and they are instead calmed by Freddy and his music. Although, in YOUR case, it's the opposite.
After Freddy wraps it up, the office blacks out, and it's just complete darkness. Now, you have two things that await you: The blood-curdling scream of Freddy as he jumpscares you, or the welcoming and relieving jingle that plays when you reached 6AM? You wait nervously, and of course, either ending is a release of tension.
- Night start. You are introduced to the game, and find your self in an office.
- Realization that you are in a bad situation. You examine your surroundings, and notice your defense systems. A pair of lights and doors, a camera to monitor the threats, a power meter, a meter showing how much power you are using, and the time. This is going to be fun...
- The Phone Guy tells you about the bad things that have happened. Your guide or friend talks to you about the lawsuits and children that have gone missing in the very restaurant, making you say, "Yeah, I'm in danger."
- Idle, beginning of nervousness. As you go into the game a little, the quiet is too loud. Nothing is happening. In other words, absence of action.
- An animatronic appears. It gets to your door and startles you. A sudden act made you jump. You quickly shut the door.
- More animatronics come, increasing the tension a lot. The anxiety, confusion and tension kicks in. Suddenly, animatronics are coming at you out of nowhere! Okay, okay, doors, power, camera, wait where did that one go? This is what you'd say. It's like being rushed.
- Power out. Suddenly, a complete absence of action comes out of nowhere. It startles you and worries you. You can't use the cameras and can't see the time. The doors, if closed, just... open. Any animatronic can walk in, but they don't. Except for Freddy.
- Idle, waiting for Freddy. You sit in your unlit dark office, waiting for Freddy to show up and do his shenanigans. As you do, tension begins to build up.
- Freddy came. You stare at the flashing face in the dark. It's staring into your soul. It looks like it's about to pounce any minute. You say, "Come on, 6AM! Turn! Turn! TURN TO 6AM!!!" You beg for the time to turn to 6AM, and it might have, or it didn't.
- Blackout. Freddy finished. The tension is now reaching to its main and very climax. You wait, and prepare yourself for a jumpscare.
- 6AM. YES! You won! You reached 6AM!!! The sound of the grandfather clock chiming fills you with pride. The sound is so... real. It's not scary, it's just... welcoming. The good feeling ends right after, as you progress to the next night. Remember, this game is called Five Nights at Freddy's. You now have four nights left.
- Jumpscare. The alternative ending. Instead of the nice jingle, you meet Freddy jumping at you with a loud scream. Game Over!
- Next night. You're back in the office. Here we go again! Only MUCH more difficult! Ironically, The Phone Guy gives you less and less information as the nights progress.
- Restart. After getting jumpscared and brought back to the main menu, you reluctantly restart the game. "I think I know what I did wrong!"
NOTICE: Power outages are caused by YOU, and is not an event that happens normally.
- Tension rebuilding. In the next night, it all starts again. Take a break if you want.
